I have always heard NB was second to none in comfort.

Never owned a pair, but that was always my understanding.

I doubt a pair of Wal-Mart or Payless will give you that same level of comfort. Might be acceptable, but wont be like NB. No way.

Poorly fit, cheap shoes can cause some serious damage to your body.

2 things that are worth spending good money on 1) Good shoes and 2) a good mattress.

Think about the amount of time you spend in/on both.

I like New Balance for running - if you are a little heavier they seem to have more cushion (I'm 200).

You guys make me want to try a pair out now.

I always get Nikes for style points but they fit funny and are never 100% comfortable.

You are so right. I fall into the same trap, sometimes. Nikes are pretty poor for running, and are continually rated poor.

I have purchased many a pair of training shoes, and have never gone wrong when I spent at least $50. I am not a big runner, so that might be the reason. No particular brand has ever stuck out over another. The big difference has mainly been in design and style.
Nike is the the brand I am least familiar with as I don't care for the company. It's possible they actally do have weak shoes that only look nice, I don't know. Only had one pair.
The cool thing about NB is the spendy ones are likely made in USA.
